Production History

Prior to the creation of Project U, there were never any plans to adapt the LEGO Time Cruisers theme into a film, as the source material is not highly regarded in the LEGO community, which has criticized the sets for looking like conglomerations of specialized pieces taken from other LEGO themes. Besides, before Ten Years of Going Crazy!, most of the studio's attention was upon Johnny Thunder and the Wisdom of the Ancients.

However, that all changed with the results of a summer 2012 survey conducted on the Mustache Maniacs Film Co. Press Room. Surprisingly, LEGO Time Cruisers fared very well against other LEGO themes in the survey, garnering 10 votes in total. When the announcement was made, there was already talks of tying the hypothetical Time Cruisers film into When Barrels Fly.

During the development of New Friends ~ An Environmental Fable, when Andrew Bermudez and Raul Flores would hold discussions that led to Project U, talks about a time travel film were tossed around, which lead to the creation of the very first version of this film.

A Future in the Past was officially announced on February 21, 2014, along with the rest of Project U, at The Second Mustache Maniacs Film Co. Fan Choice Awards. However, filming would wait while work on other Project U films began soon after. But that would not stop the film from one major set-back.

This script became something of a pain to manage internally, as multiple writers were assigned to try and "fix" the script, which was seen as being massively problematic. Even though Andrew Bermudez wrote the film's rough draft, Teresa Bermudez is officially credited as the film's writer, as she took some basics from the original script and started over in 2015. Even then, she constantly changed the script to make several scenes work and to remove any plot holes. At last, in early 2020, Andrew and Teresa Bermudez brain-stormed and finally managed to make the script work, which involved adding new scenes.

In spite of this, filming for A Future in the Past officially began on March 21, 2020, as the film shares some sets with Pharaoh's Quest: The Curse of Amset-Ra. While it then went on a multi-month hiatus in filming to complete other 2020 projects (which were slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic), filming resumed in early 2021 on sets that the film shares with other films.

A Future in the Past contains examples of the following tropes.

  • Continuity Nod: It's a time travel film in the Mustache Maniacs Film Co. cinematic universe, so these are all over the place in this film.
  • Dumb Dodo Bird: It's more of a dead Dodo Bird, but Papa Dodo's corpse appears throughout the film as Robert Nicholas' catalyst for preserving nature.
  • Our Time Machine Is Different: And they couldn't be more different! The Hypno Cruiser is a flying, hat-powered vehicle that uses its Hypno Discs as a pair of its front wheels. It has dragon wings, a propeller, and an after-burning engine mounted to the front. The Time Pack, on the other hand, is a small jet pack/propeller pack hybrid with small Hypno Discs and a centralized computer. That's not even counting the Time Booth, a rebuilt phone booth with rockets fixed to the underside, and the Twisted Time Train, a Maelstrom-corrupted WWII German train with corrupted Hypno Discs fixed to the engine.
  • Our Time Travel Is Different: While the time portals can be controlled via Dr. Cyber's Hypno Discs (his one device that allows for time travel), the wormholes themselves are capable of sending anything that enters them to another time (and even a different location in space).
  • Outdated Outfit: It's been years since Ulysses S. Powell was hired by Dr. Cyber as an assistant, yet he still dresses in his American Civil War Union Infantry uniform. Crpl. Joe Kilroy and his men even comment on this.
  • Portal to the Past: The time portals are this.
  • Radio Voice: Featured in the Hall of Extinction is the voice of the narrator discussing the history of the Dodo Bird's extinction.

  • While frequently called Tim in the original LEGO sets, he has the name Tim Timebuster in this film. This is a direct reference to the Brick Kicks comics series Time Buster, which originally introduced the character in 1994 (albeit as Max Timebuster).
  • While this film uses the US names for the Time Cruisers characters, Wacco stands out as being the only exception to this rule, as he uses his European name in this film (his US name was Cranky).
