Production History

As Project U was being developed during the production phase of New Friends ~ An Environmental Fable in 2012, there were talks between Raul Flores and Andrew Bermudez about possible crossovers outside of Legends of the Universe. While many were thrown around, one pairing that seemed to stick was LEGO Alpha Team and LEGO City. Andrew liked the idea, especially since a city environment was not one that had ever been seen in the original LEGO Alpha Team sets. The only problem was what to do for the actual story. That question, however, would be resolved only months later.

In March 2013, the video game LEGO City Undercover was released to rave reviews, with many praising the game's writing, humor, and gameplay. Once A Friend of the Police was created to ride on the game's success and went on to win Nightly News at Nine's Police Show Contest, it was decided that the game's characters would be used to turn this Alpha Team sequel into a quasi-sequel for the game as well.

The film was announced on February 21, 2014 at The Second Mustache Maniacs Film Co. Fan Choice Awards along with the rest of Project U. However, since work was still underway to complete Johnny Thunder and the Wisdom of the Ancients, this film started production late that same year, during the filming for Alpha Team: Mission Deep Jungle, as this film shares one of that film's sets. However, the film would then get almost no attention for several years. Yet, in 2020, several events would change the core of the script.

At the beginning of the year, director Andrew Bermudez was unhappy about how some of the film's plot threads went nowhere and requested a rewrite. An additional half hour of material was added, while keeping in mind that the dialogue for Cam Attaway, Flex, Crunch, and Ogel had already been recorded. This change introduced several characters from the TV Show LEGO City Adventures, an entire sub-plot based on LEGO City's Sky Police sub-theme, and deeper character complexity. This turned out to have been a proactive move, as the death of George Floyd later that same year changed the public perception of the police. With only a few tweaks in response to this event, the film was prepared to begin its core body of production in 2021.

Tropes

Alpha Team: Mission Deep City contains examples of the following tropes.

  • Adaptation Amalgamation: This film combines LEGO Alpha Team with LEGO City Undercover and LEGO City Adventures, with a peppering of other characters.
  • Adaptational Job Change: In the TV show LEGO City Adventures, Percival Wheeler is the chief of police. However, since the video game LEGO City Undercover (which is recognized as canonical) explicitly places Marion Dunby into the role of Police Chief, this film slightly demotes Wheeler to the rank of inspector. He's still a police officer, though.
  • Ambiguously Gay: The official canon states that Cam Attaway is a homosexual, yet this is never explicitly shown anywhere in the film. She is shown to be tough, male interest-leaning, and not afraid to get dirty, but that's as far as the film subtly hints at this character trait.
  • Awesome Mc Coolname: Dash Justice's name is this by itself. However, the official canon states that, like all Alpha Team agents, this is just a code name that covers up his true identity. However, both Chase McCain and Duke Detain fit this trope to the T.
  • Big Bad: The character of Ogel.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: All of Ogel's drones are this.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: The character of Ogel, as defined by "control."
  • Clueless Deputy: The character of Frank Honey.
  • Cool, but Stupid: How most of the characters perceive Inspector Wheeler's Sky Police.
  • Cowboy Cop: The character of Duke Detain.
  • Crossover: This film mashes up LEGO Alpha Team with LEGO City Undercover and LEGO City Adventures. The former, however, dictates the layout of the city. On top of that, characters from Wonders of Buoyancy, The Kingfisher, LEGO Atlantis, LEGO Time Cruisers, and LEGO Agents also appear.
  • Da Chief: The character of Chief Marion Dunby.
  • Demolitions Expert: The character of Crunch.
  • Distant Sequel: This film takes place years after Alpha Team: Mission Deep Jungle.
  • Donut Mess with a Cop: Just like in LEGO City Undercover, Chief Dunby is frequently seen eating doughnuts.
  • The Engineer: The character of Cam Attaway.
  • Evil Gloating: Ogel does this when he is relishing in the perceived success of his plan.
  • Evil is Hammy: Ogel loves to smear it in Alpha Team's face when they seem to fail.
  • Evil Laugh: Ogel loves to do this, along with Dr. Inferno.
  • Evil Minions: Ogel's legions of drones.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Ogel's voice, though this is mainly because of the life support systems that cover most of his body.
  • Friend on the Force: Chase McCain is probably the closest that Alpha Team has to an ally in the LCPD.
  • Interservice Rivalry: This film depicts MANY of these. Chase McCain and Chief Dunby certainly have one over how to handle the case, but they both have one against cowboy cop Duke Detain, who in turn thinks they're both too "by-the-book" and not action oriented. On top of this, Chief Dunby has his own with Inspector Wheeler, whose spending of millions of dollars on a sky police makes the chief accuse him of treating money like confetti.
  • Island BaseAlpha Team HQ.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: For those who are about to watch this film upon its release, beware! If you have not yet played LEGO City Undercover, this film basically spoils that video game's giant plot twist and the results of that event. In fact, that plot twist is a major driving force for this film's premise! This film also spoils from the start that Alpha Team: Mission Deep Jungle ends with Alpha Team bringing a new recruit onto the team.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Just about every character in this film thinks that Inspector Wheeler's Sky Police is one of the most idiotic wastes of money that the human brain could ever conceive, which was how most AFOLs reacted when the official LEGO City Sky Police sets were released in 2019.
  • Mission Briefing: Dash holds this session right before the team heads to LEGO City.
  • Mooks: Ogel's legions of drones, no matter their rank or position.
  • Obviously Evil: Ogel's scheme, technological applications, and even the design choices for his final base of operations all scream bad guy.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: The character of Flex.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: The colors of choice for Ogel.
  • Rogues Gallery Transplant: Dr. Inferno was originally created for the LEGO Agents theme. However, by giving him an origin story tied directly to the Bradford Rant Institute of Cosmic Kinesis, he was turned into an Alpha Team villain for this film.
  • The Squad: Alpha Team.
  • Supervillain Lair: Enforced. Ogel turns Forrest Blackwell's former mansion into this.
  • Take Over the World: Ogel's ultimate plan is this.
  • Wrench WenchThe character of Cam Attaway.
